As a veteran of the US Air Force, a teacher, an Assistant Principal, and a Principal, Dr. Richard has dedicated his career to public service. From 2008-2011, Dr. Richard was a member of the school leadership team responsible for Florence High School becoming the only “A Rated” High School in Pinal County and winning the ASU “Lead & Inspire Award.” From 2011-2012, Dr. Richard was the Principal of Globe High School where significant one year gains were made in state test scores and overall academics. During 2012-2013, Dr. Richard was the Principal of Westwood High School in Mesa, AZ. Despite the school having the highest percentage of students on Free & Reduced lunch of any other High School in the district, the school ended the year with the greatest gains in state testing scores of any other High School in the district. From 2013-2015, Dr. Richard was the Principal of Poston Butte High School. During this period of time, student enrollment increased by 400, the student failure rate decreased by over 30%, the school experienced the highest gains in state test scores in its history, and the school become the very first 9-12 High School in the history of Pinal County to be recognized by the Arizona Education Foundation as an ”A Plus School of Excellence.
Dr. Richard is one of only 6 active Kagan Cooperative Learning School trainers in the state of Arizona, and he is the only Principal to have led 3 consecutive schools, 3 years in a row, to achieve increases in state mandated test scores. Dr. Richard is a strong advocate of the Professional Learning Community (PLC), grading and assessment reform, and focusing on a student centered and positive school culture.
